Tim Brown on McKinsey Quarterly suggests to use the design thinkin approach for social issues.
Not only because design thinking is scalable and applied incrementally to better existing ideas, but also because "design thinking is accessible as an approach to innovation in a way that technical R&D is not. It can be applied by people from a broad range of backgrounds to problems ranging from creating new products and services to redesigning business processes, building new brands, and improving communications".
The best way to apply design thinking is to use the human centric design, observing people, asking them, prototyping. In yhis way we contribute to build a more sustainable world.
